Answers to All Your Questions

How do I know if I have dyslexia or dyscalculia?

A diagnostic assessment carried out by a qualified assessor will help to determine if you have dyslexia or dyscalculia. Before an assessment, it is useful to carry out a free online screening assessment. Free dyslexia and dyscalculia tests are listed on the dyslexia and dyscalculia page of the website.

What is the difference between an assessment from an  Educational Psychologist assessment and a Specialist Teacher assessment?

Both Specialist Teachers and Educational Psychologists are able to assess for dyslexia. Educational Psychologists have access to a different type of cognitive ability test that Specialist Teachers are not able to use, which has a slightly higher number of “sub-tests”. Both Specialist Teachers and Educational Psychologists can make recommendations about how the individual can best be supported. A Specialist teacher has wide experience of teaching and usually has a better understanding of the classroom environment and therefore can make more specific recommendations, but this does depend on the background and experience of each individual assessor. We would advise using an Educational Psychologist if your child is likely to need an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) in the future. Information copied from http://www.bdaydyslexia.org.uk

How do you decide if someone has dyslexia or dyscalculia?

A holistic approach is taken in order to decide if a child has any learning difficulties or not. Assessments are carried out to see what the child's strengths and weaknesses are. Data is also gathered. This information alongside observations made during the assessment and information from the background questionnaire are all used to help make conclusions.

What happens if my child doesn't have dyslexia or dyscalculia?

If a child doesn’t fit the criteria for a dyslexia or dyscalculia diagnosis, other explanations for their difficulties will be discussed if applicable. They will still receive a list of strengths and weaknesses, recommended targets and a range of suggested teaching resources and strategies to help them to develop their weaker areas will be given.
